Pre-requisite Skills for RCM Level 2 Piano Repertoire

RCM Level 2 isn't much more difficult than RCM Level 1. It gives you exposure to more pieces, and the opportunity to continue building on the skills you worked on in RCM Level 1.

Before moving up from RCM Level 1 to RCM Level 2, you'll want to make sure you've worked on being able to play in a way that expresses obvious interpretive elements. For example, if a piece is meant to sound sneaky, you want to be able to play it so it sounds sneaky.

Some Skills and Concepts You'll Work on in RCM Level 2 Piano Repertoire

  • dotted 8ths
  • dotted quarters
  • key signatures with up to 5 sharps/flats
  • variety of big jumps within a piece of music

Categories in RCM's Level 2 Piano Repertoire Book

The RCM Level 2 Piano Repertoire book is divided into 3 categories:

  • List A: Baroque and Classical Repertoire
  • List B: Romantic, 20th-, and 21st-century Repertoire
  • List C: Inventions

If you're working towards an RCM examination, be aware that the pieces included in the book are not the only approved pieces. Review the RCM Piano Syllabus 2022 for a complete list of all Level 2 pieces.

You'll also need to work on pieces from RCM Level 2 Piano Etudes in preparation for your RCM examination.

Why You Should Listen to Performances When Practicing Piano

When practicing piano, it is always useful to hear and study performances of the pieces, for several reasons:

  • Helps you select those pieces you are most interested in learning.
  • Helps you learn what the pieces are meant to sound like
  • Helps you think critically about others' interpretations, to inform your own interpretations

With this in mind, here are performances from YouTube of each piece from RCM Level 2 Piano Repertoire, Celebration Series Sixth Edition.
